5 Signs You Need Window Replacement

Window replacement is one of those necessary home maintenance tasks. Thankfully, if you have a new home, in most cases, you shouldn’t have to replace your windows. However, no matter if you have an older home or one that was built recently if your windows are showing any of these five signs, they may need to be replaced.

There’s a Draft

If you notice a draft coming from your windows, there is a good chance that it isn’t properly sealing. Though the issue could be a result of an issue around your window, if your window is old, it may the window itself. Chaulk and weatherstripping can temporarily help, but neither are permanent solutions. Experiencing a draft is not only uncomfortable, but it will also cause your HVAC system to run harder and longer — jacking up your energy bills. It’s best to get this fixed right away.

Trouble Opening or Closing Your Windows

Nothing is more frustrating than having to use all your strength to fight your window to be open or closed. If your window won’t budge or it is a struggle to maneuver, then it may mean the balance of the window isn’t right, and it needs to be replaced. Double-hung or single-hung windows in older homes are especially susceptible to developing these issues. A window that is difficult to open could be a tell-tale sign of other structural issues so it’s best to get it inspected by a professional. Contact us, we serve all of Colorado’s Front Range.

You See Condensation

It isn’t odd to see condensation on your window, but if it is inside your window then you may have an issue. Condensation — or frost or ice — between your window panes means that the seal on your window is faulty or has completely failed. Water within your window doesn’t just mean that your window needs some much-needed TLC — or to be replaced completely, it can also cause water damage which will only further result in deterioration of your window and may put other structural elements of your home in jeopardy.

It isn’t just the condensation that can cause issues. Modern windows have gas between the two panes. This gas helps to provide insulation and prevent heat transfer. As a result, a broken seal can also cause your energy bills to increase. Don’t pay more for your utilities — get your windows replaced!

Water Damage

If you have a water-damaged window, you definitely need to invest in new windows. You can easily see if it is water-damaged and the structural integrity of your windows is compromised, through a visual test or by using an object like a screwdriver to push against the frame. If the frame gives way to the pressure of your tool, then your window needs replacing soon. If your window is water-damaged, be sure to investigate to find the cause of the water damage — it may be that your window simply needs to be replaced or there might be another issue with the surrounding wall or even your roof.

Window that fails to seal

It’s Noisy

Have you ever noticed that the nearby airport, street, or even the neighbor kids seem louder than normal? It could be that your window is no longer insulated properly and needs some much-needed repair or replacement. Because the insulation is compromised, you may also notice a draft, and your energy bills going up as well.

If your windows are showing one or more of these signs, it may be time to consider window replacement. Windows that properly seal will not only keep your home comfortable and your energy bill down, but it will also protect the other structural elements of your home: replacing your windows is an investment but could save you more money in the long run.
