Identifying Hail Damage to Your Roof

The visible damage will change according to the type of shingles you have installed. Here is a guide to help you identify whether your roof has hail damage.

Asphalt & Composition Shingles

  • Asphalt or mat that appears shiny
  • Impact marks soft to the touch and black in color
  • Random imperfections with no distinguishable pattern
  • Loss of granules, which exposes the underlying bitumen

Wood Shingles

  • Split shingles
  • Gray-colored marks
  • Hail hits or dents along the splits
  • Random imperfections with no discernable pattern

Checking for Hail Damage

“Borrow” some sidewalk chalk from your kids or your neighbor’s kids.

  1. Checking for Hail DamageGet on the roof in the middle of the day when the sun is overhead.
  2. Starting on the South facing slope of the roof, mark out a 10ft X 10ft area.
  3. Look for dark marks or other irregularities on the surface of the shingles. Inspect the dark mark. If the granular is displaced, loose, or embedded in the asphalt layer beneath it, it is likely from hail damage.
  4. Push with your thumb into the dark mark to feel for slight softness. If the shingle gives a little bit, then it is a hail bruise.
  5. Count all the hail damage marks inside of your 10×10 area. If there are over 8 marks, then your roof should qualify for insurance replacement.
  6. Repeat steps 2-5 to confirm damage on at least 3 of the 4 sides of the roof.

Choosing the Right Roofing Contractor

There are key factors you need to consider when choosing a roofing contractor. The pros must have an in-depth knowledge of the claims process, what is covered, what is excluded, and how to help prevent you from spending more than your deductible out-of-pocket. A contractor with vast experience in identifying and repairing storm-damaged roofs will also make sure that everything on your insurance claim is clearly and specifically identified as legitimate hail damage so that you are protected against insurance fraud and its severe penalties.
